When my mother passed away in 1986 and my father in 1987, the sense
of loss forced me to consider my own mortality, my spirituality, and
how to fill the void that was left in my life.
For my
mother, the Church was the doorway to her spirituality and held the
answer to many of the needs we all share. For my father, nature was the
pathway to a relationship with the Almighty. For me, it was a little of
both. While the formality of religious worship services was necessary
to me, I found nature and the Bible to be a source of greater
inspiration. Soon after my parents’ passing, these inspirational
sources became even more significant. Nature photography became the
lens through which my professional aspirations were to redevelop and
more importantly, how I began to see God more clearly. Still, it was
not until I faced cancer in May of 2001, that I deepened my commitment
and urgency for them both.
In an effort to merge this relationship, through my own research and
the thoughtful assistance of my pastor, Rev. Eric Park, I selected
certain photographs to be aligned with biblically-based messages of
inspiration. Most people recognize the importance that nature holds for
the survival of the human race. Protection and conservation are
paramount. And, while that is a message of great value for this world,
nature guides me to a message of even greater value for the next.
Nature has been for me a conduit to the One who makes everything
possible. Whether I am in the wilderness or in my living room, when I
contemplate the awesome mysteries of nature and the universe, the
existence of God no longer seems so mysterious. And, when I contemplate
Jesus, His sacrifice for us and all that He offers, my purpose in life
is no longer so mysterious.
My goal in aligning God’s word with my photography is to create a
palpable daily reminder of how it is He should under gird our lives. I
find the integration of God’s word with God’s world to be an inspiring
affirmation of who He is and how we should live. May it be that way for
you.
